If you look in the mirror and you find that your tongue is white you will more than likely have two questions: what is it and how do I fix it? You are right to be curious on both those questions because it can be something that is simply annoying like bad breath or it could also be a sign of chronic disease. A white tongue when caused by bacteria is even easier to treat because all you need to do is make sure that the bacteria does not grow as rapidly or effectively in your mouth. In other words you should start thinking about a serious oral hygiene program that includes all recommended daily routines like flossing, brushing, scrapping of the tongue and mouth wash. The combination of all those things will keep the bacteria in check and your mouth healthy.

In some cases it can happen that you get a white coating due to hormonal changes or medicine that you could have started taking. If the hormones are something that the medicine will affect such as birth control then you may have found the culprit. It could also be that the taste buds are falling off the tongue which means that your tongue is not necessarily white, but that there are patterns being formed by the taste buds that remain.
